 2023 Preview 


       spanish fort completed the 2022 season with a 7-4 record. With their 6-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 6A region one, the Toros earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. spanish fort's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Pike Road by a score of 22-21.

       As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, spanish fort has gone a combined 147-31. Their 82.6% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 6A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 17 seasons, spanish fort has finished a combined 173-52. Their 77.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 6A and 8th in the AHSAA. Their last losing season was 2007.




       The Toros are led by head coach Chase Smith who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-4 record in his first season at spanish fort. Under his direction the Toros have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Smith. Over the course of his career, Coach Smith's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times .

       The seven wins in 2021 are the fewest since 2007 in their second season of varsity football on the Hill.

       The Toros enter the 2023 season riding a 5 game regular season winning streak.

       The Toros should be in contention for a playoff spot in region one this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2007 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2023.

      Drew Williamson returns at RB after rushing for 1,204 yards and 13 TDs last season. Sawyer Wilson will also be back after putting up 1,310 yards and 13 touchdowns.

      Nehemiah Hixson will be back also after posting 902 all-purpose yards and scoring 6 touchdowns last year. Cole McConathy will return at the EDGE position to anchor the Toro defense in 2023.

      The defense will be led by Bama commit and Mobile Christian transfer Sterling Dixon this season after collecting 172 total tackles and 18 sacks last season.

       The Toros open the 2023 season at home against non-region opponent Fairhope on Thursday, August 24 at The Hill. Last year the Fairhope Pirates finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 7A region one. The Pirates lost in the first round of the Class 7A playoffs to Auburn by a score of 35-17.

       spanish fort and Fairhope have met a total of 8 times on the football field. The Toros have a 4-4-0 record against the Pirates. They last met in 2022 with Fairhope winning by a score of 34-28.

       spanish fort lost 6A All-State  athlete Jake Godfrey to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

       The Toros return 6A All-State Senior defensive lineman Cole McConathy. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.
